Riding In Wagons

By Jeffrey Neal

As A kid I grew up in Pennsylvania. We were lucky enough to have distinct seasons that created a atmosphere of change. The rolling hills were perfect for many outdoor activities, and riding down the gentle slopes in my red wagon was one of my favorites.

Once Winter was ready to let go, we all put away our sleds and started cleaning and oiling our wagons. They were constructed with metal and could be a little cold in early Spring, but a pillow or blanket between you and the steel helped. As kids we never really noticed such discomfort because we were always on the go.

Some of the newer models are made with plastic and canvas making them lighter and some even have canopies to block the suns rays when it is hot. We didn't know we were missing out on those luxuries.

The latest wagons may be easier to clean, but I'm glad I have the memories of flying down the hillsides with my friends. I hope every kid gets to enjoy that thrill!

Growing up on the farm my bother and I spend many hours on hay wagons. Since they had no springs and the roads and fields were rough, riding out to pick up hay was a jolting and bouncing experience.

We had a red steel wagon for play too but work had to come first.
